Collecting Childhood Pictures

When I saw these pictures, I was actually surprised at how different I look from my mother. Nowadays I tend to forget that I am actually mixed and have a background from the Antilles, so these pictures reminded me of it.

I also thought that the group picture was interesting because it is a picture of my mother and me and a close friend group circle. It also looks like a family picture but it is only people who were around when I grew up (two of my babysitters, my mothers best friend and her son, a friend of my mother).

Symbolic objects linked to my father

Some of these objects were given to my from my father. He gave me the necklace after going on a holiday on Tahiti. I think this necklace has a strong symbolic meaning because my father comes from Guadeloupe, a French colonised island just like Tahiti. I feel like this necklace links me to my guadeloupe backgrounds.

The guitar string is referring to how my parents met. My father was performing in a bar with his guitar.

The heart key holder was also something my father gave me.

The negative film is a actually without any picture, I thought it could represent the absence of memories with my father.




My idea is to incorporate these objects to the puppet of my father.

These puppets are realistic and I want to make the puppet unrealistic, looking like the references above.

In French we have a saying about building up your cultural knowledge : having a "Cultural Backpack"

I thought about representing my father as a backpacker.
I always felt like I was missing on his culture because I couldn't have access to it. Now that he is trying to reach more to me, it might be possible. So a backpacker would be a nice metaphor for sharing culture. It can also be a interpreted as a wandering paternal figure, always away.

Personal Goals during this project

- Understanding and accepting my family situation, because before I always felt frustrated.

- Discover about my Guadeloupean background.
